“..and this is the war room! everyone’s at lunch right now so we have the place to ourselves.” your eyes immediately fall on the large triangular table in the middle of the room and plasma screen tv that plays a rotating cognito inc. logo; brett really wasn’t kidding when he said the place was just a big metal box filled with fancy doo dads. “you know, I thought this place would be a little more..cavey. It’s not cozy just yet but I can see how a place like this could make someone feel important.” you say with a soft chuckle, taking in your surroundings before looking at brett with a nervous smile. “that’s the spirit! you ARE important and pretty soon, this place will even feel like home!” he says, smiling encouragingly and wrapping an arm around your shoulder before squeezing you against his side. 

in the middle of your conversation, the sound of the sliding metal doors opening and shutting behind you make you and brett turn to face them. “yoooo, there he is! a-dog, come meet our new teammate and your future best friend!” brett says, holding his arm out to grandiosely gesture to the disheveled man who had just walked in. ho. ly. shit. andre freezes in place when brett points him out to you, his first reaction to introduce himself throwing itself out the window when his eyes land on you. time almost moves in slow motion when you smile at him: that edible should have worn off a couple of hours ago, right? so why is he seeing the literal embodiment of beauty and why does his body feel like he’s been hit by a semi in the best way possible?

andre grips the sides of the sink as he faces himself in the mirror, face stern and (shockingly) sober. suddenly, he jabs a finger at his reflection, his breathing becoming shaky. “you, doctor andre motherfucking lee, are going to do this today or die trying.” almost immediately, he slaps himself across the face before dragging his hands down his face and groaning in frustration. “FUCCK, THAT WAS SO STUPID! THAT WAS NEVER GOING TO WORK!” he yells, sliding down the wall of the bathroom. he had finally had enough. for months, andre had watched you, avoided you, drunkenly attempted to flirt (he only ran away because his fear got the best of him, and he threw up in a nearby potted plant), and even made small talk with you; what wasn’t getting through to you? couldn’t you see the way he looked at you when reagan did mission debriefings that bored him out of his mind, didn’t you notice how he would go out of his way to visit your office or “conveniently” ended up at the same restaurant for lunch as you? if this is what an office crush felt like, he’d sooner blow his brains out before ever feeling like this again. but god, it hurt so good.

to this day, he can still vividly picture the night the two of you stayed late to work on your own projects and taken the same elevator up to the lobby. he was practically shaking with nerves when you stood next to him, causing you to ask if he was alright and suddenly, the two of you were holding hands and doing breathing exercises; andre mostly certainly calmed down if the dopey grin on his face had anything to show for it. of course, he could go on for hours about all the times you lent him your pen or the way you would unknowingly get him all worked up when you would lean in close and whisper some snarky remark to him about the mission (maybe that day he would have to go home and relieve himself one way or another), but saying something like that out loud would only inch him further toward an early grave. so andre was going to do it first. he had planned out exactly how and where he was gonna do it, going as far as to beg reagan to give him as much work as she wanted because when would reagan ridley miss out on the chance to give out more work?

and now here he was. “andre! working late again? reagan is really drilling into you, huh?” he could practically hear you smiling before he turns away from the elevator to give you a stiff wave, a tight-lipped smile on his face as you jog up to him and nudge him with your elbow. the two of you stand next to each other as you tap away at something on your phone and sigh softly. andre doesn’t dare to make confrontation, not confident in what will come out of his mouth next but he can feel his conscious yelling at him to just hurry up and do it. he’s about to open his mouth before the elevator doors open and you step in with andre behind you. “what floor? or are you done for today?” you say, your finger hovering over the button pad. “uh, l-lobby.” you press the button before leaning against the elevator wall while andre tries to keep his eyes off of you; the lobby was a ways down from the main building so there was plenty of time to talk. for about 5 minutes. the elevator jerks to a stop, making you wobble forwards with a yelp and andre to suddenly snap out of his panicked thoughts as he grabs onto the railing on the wall. the two of you look at each other, clearly confused before you look at the buttons by the door. “no emergency button? i knew we were the shadow government but this is ridiculous.” you grumble before putting your hands on your hips. “guess we’ll have to call someone to come and get us.”

andre looks around the elevator, trying to find another way out that maybe the two of them weren’t seeing; this wasn’t happening. he could handle being stuck, that wasn’t a problem considering he didn’t have any pressing matters to get to. but an enclosed space? ESPECIALLY an enclosed space with YOU? you would have to kill him to get that fantasy out of him. at the mere idea of being stuck here with you, he can’t help the nerves crawling up his throat. was he really going have to put it all out there for you to see here of all places? he wasn’t ready, he hadn’t planned what he was going to say yet. his mind raced at a million miles a minute, eyes darting all over the floor and his heart beating crazy out of his chest. he doesn’t even hear you when you call his name before you finally reach out to touch his shoulder. “andre?” “IMINLOVEWITHYOU” it’s quiet after that, andre’s face turning a bright red as you tilt your head. “you..huh?” andre freezes, more than unwilling to repeat himself: only problem was is that it was out there now and no turning back. “FUCK, i’m in love with you, ok?! i love the way you eat the same thing almost everyday, i love the way you laugh, i love the way you whisper stuff to me during meetings, i love the way you’re so fucking nice to people who don’t deserve it, i love all of that corny fucking stuff! i can barely sleep at night from how much i think of you and i can’t think straight when i’m around you! it’s so fucking annoying to start clamming up like that around you and we’re gonna die in a fucking elevator and i didn’t want to die without saying something!”

more silence between the two of you and andre is sure he’s fucked it up, not even daring to look in your general direction. when he does steal a quick glance at you, though, he’s shocked to see your face. you’re smiling, your face is red, and most importantly, you’re looking at him. “really?” before you can say something else, the elevator jerks alive; andre lets out a yelp and you immediately grab onto the railing behind you, thinking that this is the end until the elevator ride commences just as smoothly. a few minutes later, andre’s phone buzzes in his pocket before he fishes it out of his cost: “Sorry, was doing something in the basement, power surge”. soon enough, the elevator doors slide open to the lobby. “so, uh, about the elevator-” “crazy what paranoia can do to you, huh? i gotta tell you, that, uh...cocaine! yeah, that cocaine must have been WAYYY too much. can barely remember what i said in there.” andre says with a forced laugh, making the smile on your face grow and making him metaphorically shrink; he wasn’t sure what he was expecting when he confessed to you, but it definitely wasn’t this. he wasn’t OPPOSED to the idea of you feeling the same way, but he was almost intimidated at the way you were actually trying to identify the metaphorical elephant in the room.

“what did you say in there?” “nothing.” “come onnnn, andre!” you whine, grabbing his arm as he tries to walk away; trying to shake you off was futile before he finally looks at you and you raise your eyebrows eagerly. “good night, y/n.” you let his arm go in defeat as you puff up your cheeks and blow air out, andre walking away from you as he tries to suppress the smile on his face; he wasn’t gonna let you see how much he enjoyed the fact that you had been so wild to know more. “andre!” he makes it a point to turn around slow enough that you can’t see the traces of a smile on his face; however, that all flies out the window in no time at all when you take andre’s hand, squeezing it as you press a soft kiss to his cheek. “drive safe.” you say with a slight chuckle as you watch the way red crawls up andre’s neck before walking away. almost in a daze, he hobbles back to his car before sitting in it with a dopey grin on his face. he pumps his fists in the air as he slams his face into the driver’s wheel, the sound of the horn ringing into the night.
